BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION

KST is one of the world's leading suppliers of endoscopes for all fields of application. The family-owned company with its headquarters in Tuttlingen, Germany has 3800 employees worldwide. With a history that stretches back over 60 years, KST is well-known for its innovative and high-quality products. Its range of products has been rounded off with the development of the integrated operating room OR1TM and by integrating the field of flexible endoscopy into the various specialties. MAIN TASKS WITHIN THE PROJECT
KST is primarily involved in the ggeneration of a concept and a model of a micro-imaging device including illumination and vision based on semiconductor technology; KST will also design a multi-element vision system (all in WP6). Molecular imaging for tumor detection and integration of steering and stabilization techniques for the micro-imaging device are additional tasks of KST.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
KST continues to produce groundbreaking developments. The increasing complexity of endoscopic interventions makes it necessary to allow simultaneous observation and documentation, which can only be realized by high-quality video technology applied to endoscopy. We introduced the first endoscopic 3-chip camera or the digital image-processing module (IPM) were vital steps towards an image quality that meets the extreme requirements of medical diagnostics. KST marketed the first system for PDD (Photodynamic Diagnosis) as early as 1995. A system consists of components designed in relation to each other: The high-power light source D-LIGHT C, special telescopes and a particularly sensitive endoscopic camera. PDD is dependent on the use of suitable and permitted marker substances.

As a result of successful experience, this technology was modified and a system for tissue-characteristic autofluorescence (AF) marketed in 1998. The fields of PDD- and AF-applications are the early diagnosis of bladder and bronchial carcinomas. Further fields of application such as ENT, neurosurgery, laparoscopy and gynaecological indications followed. Today KST is the world-market leader in endoscopic fluorescence imaging.

Resources: The Technology Research department of KST will undertake the work of the endoscopic related workpackages. KST has successfully participated in several European project in the last years such as IVP (Intracorporeal videoprobe), MISSIMU, MINOSC.
